Electricity Operations Policy Engineer

National Grid Electricity Transmission Owner Operations is the business unit responsible for managing work on substation, overhead lines and underground cable high voltage transmission assets. We are looking for support team specialists to implement change in safety, security and environmental policy and supporting procedures.

As part of a team of specialists you will be responsible and accountable for producing and maintaining an allocated set of policies and procedures relating to safely managing National Grid’s UK Electricity Transmission Owner sites and teams.

The post holders will be responsible for the completeness and accuracy of the policies. The role will involve identifying policy requirements and writing deliverable compliant procedures and project managing implementation.Consistent policy is required to ensure National Grid Electricity Transmission Owner Operations:Complies with health,safety and environmental legislation, manages the SHES interaction with third parties ensuring occupiers duties are identified and addressed.

The role requires:

  • Ability to communicate effectively to staff at all levels of the organisation:
  • Ability to produce and deliver presentations to Senior Managers and / or large teams of Operations staff.
  • Demonstrable ability to convert legislation into practical guidance for Operational teams to follow.
  • Knowledge and experience of writing procedures and delivering work to the Health & Safety at Work Act, and all Regulations under that relating to management of industrial installations including the Management Regulations, CD and ESQCR
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation, particularly relating to oil, SF6, and waste management
  • Ideally experience of substation, OHL or cable operation
  • Awareness of the function of substations, and high voltage electrical circuits involved in the operation of the transmission system, the asset types found in them, and the risks and consequences on site of assetfailure.

You will need :

  • Minimum of NEBOSH Health or Safety certificate or IEMA Certificate: NEBOSH Diploma level or equivalent desirable.
  • Experience of delivering safety or environmental improvement and via policy and procedural change in a challenging environment.
  • HND in engineering (or higher), Suitable experience of managing industrial sites comparable with large substations.
  • Full driving licence
