They’ve introduced a dedicated Health & Safety manager in every region of the UK and Ireland. You’ll be warmly welcomed as an expert in your field. You’ll shape the way things are done, introduce new ideas and help create a safety culture that goes beyond compliance to ensure operations, employees and customers are truly safeguarded.
Challenge and change
It can be challenging here; that’s retail. Hopefully, you’ll see that as a positive too – you can’t make change happen without questioning the way things are done.
You’ll have the chance to climb the ladder (provided you have the appropriate footwear, of course.) The company is hugely supportive of CPD – both in terms of time and money, so you can expect to broaden your technical knowledge and gain new qualifications. If you have an existing expertise (for example, fire, food, waste, construction, contractor management, warehousing) you could become a company-wide safety lead in that area.
You need a NEBOSH General Certificate at least. A diploma would be nice. Day to day, the job spans inspections, audits, training, risk assessments and monitoring across stores, offices and distribution centres. You’ll need to show you can handle all that and that you’re comfortable working in a large multi-site environment; retail or logistics experience would be a major plus.
Personally, we’re looking for confidence, credibility and strong communication skills – essential for dealing with regulators and enforcement officers externally as well as advising and influencing your colleagues.
