Head of Health, Safety and Environment

Job Description:

One of the highest profile health and safety leadership roles in the UK.

About Us

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is a non-departmental public body created through the Energy Act 2004. Our role is strategic: we establish the overall approach, allocate budgets, set targets and monitor progress - we do not have a hands-on role in cleaning up our facilities. Instead, we deliver our mission through others, primarily Site Licence Companies (SLCs).

Our work, cleaning up the UK’s nuclear legacy, is the largest, most important environmental restoration programme in Europe.

About the role

The Head of Health, Safety and Environment provides assessments and specialist advice on the management of HSE risks to senior NDA stakeholders, acting as a “Strategic Authority” on HSE matters. You will also operate as the lead interface to the Chair of the NDA Board Safety committee and managing all HSE aspects on behalf of the Director of Nuclear Operations. .

The Head also works across the estate to support the identification, sharing and adoption of good practice.

About you

For this critically important role, we need a truly impressive individual. You will be seen as a safety industry leader, with the ability to take a strategic view and work collaboratively and pragmatically with all stakeholders as well as having the gravitas and credibility to represent the NDA when interfacing with key senior stakeholders within the NDA, across the estate and at the most senior levels of Government, IGOs and industry.

Other knowledge and qualifications include:

  • Chartered membership of IOSH
  • holding a senior role in a discipline of nuclear / conventional safety
  • robust understanding of decommissioning / conventional safety including environmental regulation and CDM.
  • a working knowledge of the wide range of operational and decommissioning activities at nuclear sites would be beneficial but not essential.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority is committed to encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion in our workplace and so if you’re a suitably qualified applicant we’ll welcome your application whatever your gender, race, disability, religion, belief, sexual orientation, marital status or age.
