Occupational Health & Safety Specialist

Wessex Archaeology is one of the largest independent archaeological practices in the UK and is a registered Charity whose aims are to promote the advancement of education, the arts, culture, heritage and science. We have offices in Salisbury, Sheffield, Maidstone, Bristol, Edinburgh and Welshpool. The position will be based from our head office in Salisbury, but will involve frequent travel to other regional offices and sites.

The position:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Occupational Health and Safety specialist to help build on, promote and embed a safe and healthy working culture across the company. We aspire to be the safest archaeological practice in the UK where our people’s health and wellbeing is paramount and our reputation for safe working is regarded as an asset by our clients. Your role will be to make connections with colleagues, clients and other stakeholders, advise on safe working practices and is a fantastic opportunity to work in a business that aims to stimulate positive change in society through the work that it does. As the champion of occupational health and safety, your role is to supervise and coordinate systems of work to meet the highest safety standards. You will also be expected to audit and develop existing site’s safety plans and to mentor site safety supervisory staff.

The post is line managed by the Compliance Director.

Position requirements:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • NEBOSH General Certificate as a minimum (or equivalent)
  • Technical Member of IOSH (or equivalent)
  • CSCS Site Card, Safety Officer

An advantage would be:

  • NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ 4/5, NCRQ
  • Graduate Member of IOSH (or equivalent)
  • NEBOSH Fire Prevention and Risk Management Certificate
  • Environmental Management Systems Qualification
  • Experience of attaining ISO accreditation via previous experience of quality and H&S management standards

You will need to be a confident communicator and have a high standard of written English along with the ability to focus on the big picture whilst still paying attention to detail.
