Safety and Health Advisor - Midlands

A vacancy has arisen within our Safety, Health, Environment, Community and Sustainability team (SHECS) for a Safety and Health Advisor. The base location for this role is flexible as we have facilities across the Midlands region which could be suitable.

The purpose of the role is to support the Safety and Health Manager and UK Metals business to enable a Zero Harm workplace.

Key accountabilities of the role holder include:

  • Provide support and assistance for the continual improvement in Health and Safety, consistent with the UK Metals Safety and Health Management System. 
  • Assist in the development and implementation of safety initiatives, including SHECS plans and training consistent with the overall UK Metals division’s objectives
  • Enable / promote the active engagement in these by line management within all business functions.
  • Support safety and health compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations
  • Be an effective and timely communicator of requirements to all business functions.
  • Provide support and assistance to the Safety and Health Manager to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and Company policy.
  • Support the effective and timely execution of health and safety initiatives
  • Report on their progress
  • Promote SHECS in day to day activity
  • Assist in maintaining awareness of best practice in the health and safety areas
  • Identify areas of possible improvement / identify and share best practice
  • As part of the overall Health and Safety team, ensure areas of concern are communicated and addressed
  • Ensure that safety audits, risk assessments, job cycle checks and Safety Conversations are carried out with the required frequency across all of the sites and that safety plans are up-to-date.
  • Help identifying health and safety training needs and competency requirements
  • Ensure that appropriate training and other support is delivered.

The candidate will have sound working knowledge of current UK Health and Safety legislation and awareness of other relevant EU Directives / Regulations and UK Legislation. They will have NEBOSH / IOSH or similar certifications and affiliations preferred, but not essential. Applicants will be IT Literate and will have experience in the waste management industry, preferred but not essential. They will also hold a valid UK Driving Licence.

Applicants must have exceptional organisational skills with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy. They will have excellent interpersonal skills, be self-motivated, flexible and adaptable. The candidate should have strong written and verbal communication skills combined with integrity and confidentiality. They will be able to manage multiple deadlines in a multi-site environment.
