Head of Biological Safety

King’s Health & Safety Services

The salary will be paid at Grade 7, £41,212 to £49,149 per annum, inclusive of £3,223 per annum London Allowance.

This post will be permanent.

This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent.

An opportunity for an experienced research scientist who may be looking for a change in career path, whilst remaining in a research environment, has arisen in a prestigious central London university.

King’s College London is a large multi-campus, multi-faculty research led University with close links to three London NHS Foundation Trusts. The University wishes to appoint a Head of Biological Safety.

Reporting to the Director of Health & Safety Services, via the Deputy Director, the primary function of the Head of Biological Safety is to develop the strategy for the safe management of biological risks within the organisation. Providing professional and technical advice on all H&S matters for work with HG1-HG3 biological agents and animals, including genetic modifications, controlled and regulated materials. The post holder will liaise with Heads of Schools/Departments/Divisions, local biological safety personnel, researchers and staff in areas of the organisation in which work with such material, or that which may contain such contaminants, is carried out. The post holder will be the University’s competent person ensuring best practice at the University and will also liaise with external enforcement authorities.

The role requires the post holder to have understanding and experience of the practical application and implementation of biological safety within a research laboratory environment, including GM and infectious disease research. The applicants would benefit from experience in developing policy/procedures and working within a safety management system and advising on legal compliance and good practice.

The selection process will include a panel interview (including a case study presentation).
