Health and Safety Manager – Social Care

Do you sometimes feel as if you’re up a wonky stepladder with a faulty locking mechanism and no-one will listen to you?

If you’re a talented health and safety expert with experience in social care, come and join an organisation which takes your advice seriously. We’re a national charity providing support to people with learning disabilities.

You’ll combine great technical and statutory understanding of health and safety issues with a persuasive and personable approach. You’ll work with our staff around the country to turn policy into ways of behaving that make it real and relevant.

Based at our Milton Keynes head office but with regular travel around the country, you’ll manage a small team while providing direct training, technical advice and support to our operational colleagues.

You’ll analyse and report on incidents and accidents promptly, encouraging staff and the organisation to learn from what has happened, and liaise with insurers and external auditors. You’ll write and present reports to the senior management team and Trustee Board on the overall health and safety performance of our organisation, and make recommendations for the continuing evolution and improvement of the function.

About us

MacIntyre is a national charity employing over 2000 staff and supporting 1500 children, young people and adults who have a learning disability and/or autism. We have residential and day services plus a school and other educational provisions across England and Wales.

We support many individuals whose behaviour can present challenges, and we place a premium on enabling people to make their own choices, take calculated risks in their development, and live as independently as possible. This can sometimes present related health and safety issues.

About you

You’ll have health and safety leadership experience in the social care sector, across a multi-site organisation. You must have good training skills, with an engaging and motivating approach both to your team and the wider staff teams. You’ll be able to evaluate, interpret and act on information both thoroughly and quickly.

It’s important that you have a relevant qualification and ideally hold chartered membership of IOSH.

You must have a driving licence and your own transport, as you will need to travel regularly to services around the country. This is likely to involve occasional overnight stays.

Pay and Rewards

MacIntyre’s range of benefits includes:

  • This role attracts a car allowance, currently £2,000 a year. In addition, reasonable mileage expenses are paid.
  • Generous annual leave allowance of 33 days including statutory public holidays, rising with service
  • Workplace pension scheme
  • Employee Assistance scheme to support your health and wellbeing
  • MacIntyre Staff Savings Scheme

This is a full-time post, Monday to Friday, 35 hours a week, although some flexibility over hours is required.

Interviews will take place on 14th and 16th January
