Head of Health and Safety, London

Marine Society & Sea Cadets (MSSC) is the governing charity of the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC), the UK’s largest maritime youth charity. Our 400 Sea Cadet Units nationally inspire 14,000 young people between 10 & 18 to learn and develop new skills that give them a head start in life through adventurous nautical activity. We also offer educational opportunities and financial support for professional seafarers.

We are currently seeking to appoint a dynamic and experienced risk and safety professional to become our Head of Health and Safety. The incumbent will drive our strategy for health, safety and environmental functions across all of our facilities, activities and audiences. The successful candidate will also be tasked with developing and implementing a progressive health and safety management system across the organisation and promoting its adoption at every level, through training, advice and guidance and by example.

The Head of Health and Safety will have responsibility for maintaining health and safety at the heart of MSSC’s governance and will need to build strong relationships with a variety of audiences, including volunteers, trustees and counterparts within the MoD (as the MSSC’s key sponsor). Excellent skills in leadership, risk and change management, audit and compliance will also be essential for this role. This is a hands-on role and demands a willingness to get involved at all levels and requires an individual who can both team-work and self-service effectively.

The successful candidate will need leadership experience, chartered membership of a national professional health and safety body (or equivalent from a recognised risk management body) with project/people management skills. The role will require regular travel within the UK and availability outside of regular office hours.

We are offering a competitive reward package including eligibility to join the employer’s generous voluntary contributory pension scheme and the MSSC private medical insurance scheme, and a generous leave entitlement.

Applications should consist of a completed application form, and the completed equal opportunities monitoring form, both available from the website. Please feel free to submit your CV in support of your application.

Please email applications to recruitment@ms-sc.org. Alternatively, please print out and post your completed application form to Zivile Tervydyte, The Marine Society and Sea Cadets, 202 Lambeth Road, London SE1 7JW.

Closing date for applications: midday, 3 February 2019

Interview Date: 11 February 2019

Successful applicants will be required to undergo relevant mandatory checks
