Health & Safety Advisor

Central Saint Martins – University of the Arts London

Your New Company

The University of the Arts London (UAL) has an international reputation in art, design, fashion, communication and the performing arts.  We have close to 19,000 students from over 130 countries.  UAL is made up of 6 colleges – Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Arts – and they are currently looking for a Health & Safety Advisor to be based at Central Saint Martins.

Central Saint Martins (CSM) is a world-leading centre for arts and design education.  Its reputation stems from the creative energy of its staff and students and the stellar achievements of its graduates nationally and internationally.  The nine programmes at CSM explore the boundaries of their discipline.  Students and staff are continually alert to new ideas, and they are curious and restless in developing beyond the expected norms of their subject, so emerging work is at the forefront of its area.  CSM sits at the heart of London’s creative scene, and of one of Europe’s most dynamic new culture and innovation quarters at King’s Cross, making the college increasingly important to London’s cultural life, and indicative of their general desire to open up CSM to as broad an audience as possible.

Your New Team

As the Health & Safety Advisor for Central Saint Martins you will be an integral part of UAL’s health and safety team, which is part of the Operations and External Affairs (OEA) directorate which reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Operations and External Affairs (the ‘COO’).  Led by the Director of Health and Safety, their aim is to ensure that their staff and students are able to work and study safely without harm to their health.  The team includes 4 college-based health and safety advisers as well as an estates health and safety adviser and a fire safety adviser who all provide the highest quality support and advice across UAL on all matters relating to health and safety, and fire safety.

Your New Role

This is a unique role for a proactive professional to provide information, advice and support on all aspects of Health and Safety in an internationally renowned art, design and performance college. Day to day responsibilities will include:

  • Building on current good practice, working closely with staff and students across a wide range of disciplines in a lively, creative environment.
  • Work across the University collaborating with colleagues in the health and safety team on shared issues and projects.
  • Providing advice on technical health and safety matters.
  • Developing the College’s annual health and safety annual operating plan to ensure that CSM continues to improve health and safety performance.
  • Monitoring compliance with relevant legislation including creating regular reports on health and safety performance
  • Investigating accidents and incidents, taking part in audits, undertaking or arranging inspections, consulting with Trade Union representatives, overseeing risk assessments, providing health and safety training, planning emergency drills and participating in relevant committee meetings.

You will be based alongside the CSM operating team and you will need to be able to build strong working relationships with key stakeholders in that team including Head of Technical Resources and the Director of College Resources and Administration.  You will also be responsible for CSM’s Archway Site and be expected to support the wider H&S team across the additional sites.

What you need to be Successful

In order to be appointed as the new Central Saint Martin’s Health & Safety Advisor you will need to be an experienced Health and Safety professional with a successful track record in delivering a high standard of Health and Safety advice and support in a diverse environment.  Experience of working in the higher education, performing arts or creative sectors is desirable, but not essential. You will need to hold a NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification and be a Graduate member of IOSH (GradIOSH), working towards Chartered membership.  Support will be given to enable you to achieve Chartership.  You will ideally have specialist knowledge of DSE and manual handling assessment, machinery safety, biological hazards, fire safety, GEEPs and PEEPs, electrical safety, COSHH assessment.

The UAL health and safety team supports staff and students to achieve their desired creative outcomes and this requires people who are flexible, open minded about possible solutions to complex health and safety problems, who can adapt their thinking, work with others and really understand what someone is aiming to make, do, develop and deliver.  This role requires an adaptable approach that never falls below the highest professional standards.

What you’ll receive in return

In return, University of the Arts London offers generous leave, an attractive public sector pension and a commitment to your continuing personal development and training in an environment that encourages excellence, creativity and diversity. Relocation assistance is available.
