Senior Construction Safety Advisor

Do you have proven experience of managing operational and strategic health and safety issues, as well as developing and implementing improvements, within an estates environment, plus a real desire to play a key role in a high profile programme of works? Then make the move to the House of Commons Strategic Estates.

You’ll be part of a Strategic Estates team that looks after the buildings of Parliament and provides service to both Houses. Operating on a World Heritage site that attracts visitors from all over the world, it’s a challenging environment where conservation and the need to innovate and build for the future coincide.

It’s a great opportunity to play a truly vital role, given the nature of work and the environment. Indeed, you’ll be key to ensuring a safe workplace for everyone on the programme as you create an environment that’s conducive to normal health and well-being. Acting as the subject matter expert and ‘go-to’ person for any health, safety and environment matters or concerns, we’ll rely on you to provide up-to-date advice and knowledge of best practice in a construction setting too. You’ll also be responsible for all health and safety activities on your designated site, throughout every stage of each project. That means from commissioning, construction, conversion, renovation, repair, fit out and maintenance, through to decommissioning, demolition or dismantling of a building structure. In short, it promises to be a role full of challenge, variety and interest.

To succeed, you’ll need a NEBOSH Construction Certificate, or BOHS Certificate of Competence in Asbestos, or equivalent. You’ll also need Tech IOSH, or similar membership and a minimum of AIEMA or similar and knowledge of Control of Asbestos Regulations, ACoP and associated guidance. Specialist knowledge of health and safety legislation, standards and best practice, including inspections and reporting of the working environment and safety, is essential too. We’ll also be looking for a track record in civil engineering works and building and construction projects, plus familiarity with the latest Building Regulations. Adept at planning and organising the complex implementation of H&S procedures for large groups of individuals and multiple sites and engaging people with positive change to enhance their safety, is vital too. And, when it comes to negotiating with, or influencing others, you have the customer service and communication skills it takes to do just that.

In addition to an attractive salary, the benefits package include the possibility of flexible working, while annual leave entitlement starts at 30 days per year and increases with length of service. There are also subsidised canteens and a gym on-site and a season ticket loan scheme is available
