Safety, Health and Environment Director

The North British Distillery is a distillery and warehousing business, jointly owned by Diageo and The Edrington Group. As one of the major suppliers to the expanding Scotch whisky industry, it plays an important part in the production of many of the world’s finest whisky brands.

The distillery is situated, very unusually, in the heart of Edinburgh and a bonded warehousing facility is located in Muirhall.  North British is keen to strengthen the responsibility for Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) controls within their Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to ensure that it is constantly compliant and focused on safety at all times.

The Managing Director is passionate in his support for SHE and ensuring that safety comes first.  This role will be given freedom to drive change and improve safety and environmental performance across all aspects of the business.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the SHE team and establish the strategy and implementation plan for continuous improvement of Safety, Health and Environmental compliance across the business

  • Work in partnership with the SLT to ensure that implementation of all new and existing SHE legislation is communicated and embedded in all areas of the business, with awareness raised at all levels

  • Drive COMAH compliance across both sites

  • Ensure all risks and required controls have been identified and actively coach the business in delivering the action plans required to address these

  • Drive action ownership at all levels of the business and ensure investigations and root cause analysis are completed thoroughly and in a timely manner

  • Communicate any internal or external updates in relation to SHE compliance clearly and ensure any resulting changes are properly embedded via the SHE management systems

  • Lead the external relationships with key bodies including HSE, SEPA and the SWA

Experience:

  • Extensive knowledge of SHE leadership, including development and implementation of SHE strategy and improvement plans
  • Experience of working in COMAH-regulated industries

  • NEBOSH diploma (or equivalent level) qualified, CMIOSH desirable and preferably with six sigma blackbelt

  • Experience in high risk environments such as food and drink manufacturing, chemical or oil and gas

  • Strong leadership and coaching skills enhanced by excellent communication abilities

  • Passionate, focused, credible and ambitious

A rare chance to work in a highly respected industry in a leading business, as part of the Senior Leadership Team.

Excellent package available.
