About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Safety Health and Environment (SHE) Advisor at the new Rosalind Franklin Institute (RFI) at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL).

Your role will be split between the two sites; as RFI Health and Safety Advisor you will advise on hazards and risk assessment, lead RFI in establishing H&S (Health and Safety) systems and processes, assist in identification of hazards and establishing RFI safe operating procedures for new equipment, staff and collaborating users and will report to the RFI Head of Operations.

As a RAL Health and Safety Advisor you will lead, with others, the development, implementation and improvement of the STFC SHE Management System across STFC and RAL in particular, reporting to the RAL SHE Group leader.

Some of the responsibilities for this split role will include but are not limited to:

  • providing advice to RFI management, staff and others using RFI on the application and implementation of the STFC SHE Management Systems, SHE codes, and SHE training within RFI
  • providing professional SHE advice and guidance to management, employees, tenants and facility users and supporting them in discharging their responsibility for the implementation of the STFC SHE Management System
  • monitoring the installation of RFI experimental equipment or new experimental procedures and ensuring the preparation of risk assessments. Advising on the suitability and sufficiency of risk assessments.

About you

You will have had experience of working in academic science, private sector science or high technology science and engineering sectors. You will also be educated to degree level in a science or engineering discipline and/or have substantial experience in a Health and Safety advisory role and will have experience of implementing H&S systems and controls.

It would be advantageous if you are currently a member of a H&S professional body, have attained a level 6 qualification/NVQ 6 in H&S or have experience of developing/delivering H&S training and of auditing.
