Health and Safety Officer

Big changes. No excuses. That’s what we’re delivering at Wirral Council. We’ve got ambitious targets to meet by 2020. To achieve everything we have promised to our residents, we need people who are driven and ready to deliver the very best for our communities.

Wirral is home to vibrant, energetic and engaged communities, people who take real ownership of their local area and are passionate about making Wirral a better place.

It is a fantastic place to live, work and visit.

We are an employer who supports, who is flexible but who demands the very best.

We're looking for an experienced and qualified Health and Safety professional, ideally a Chartered Member of IOSH or working towards this. Delivering health and safety advice and support in local government and local schools requires a commitment to excellent customer service. You must be self motivated and want to make a difference by supporting managers and headteachers.

In this role, you'll work with the health and safety team to continuously develop our policies and guidance and working on your own initiative you will be proactive to help us deliver our objectives. You will identify and implement solutions to health and safety issues and challenges across the Council and Wirral schools.

You will ensure Council services are compliant with UK/EU health and safety legislation, local authority policy and guidance, national standards and best practice and contribute to the development of an effective health and safety management system throughout the Council.

You will deliver advice and support to managers and headteachers to ensure health, safety and welfare standards are maintained and improved.

You will visit Council and school sites to complete health and safety compliance audits, fire risk assessments, accident investigations. You will contribute to the delivery of training to all school staff and Council managers. You will also contribute to the review and development of Council and school related H&S policy guidance.

You'll need to hold a recognised diploma at level 6 (or equivalent) or above in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management and a recognised qualification for undertaking fire risk assessments - plus a recognised qualification in delivering training.

Experience of working in a similar role for a large diverse organisation is an advantage providing advice and guidance to managers and head teachers on complex safety, occupational health and welfare issues to ensure effective resolution and compliance.

You will need a track record of providing practicable solutions to health safety and welfare issues and have a can-do approach to everything you do. Above all you will be looking to improve the way we engage with our employees/residents/customers to ensure they are at the heart of everything we do.

Interviews are planned for the 18th November 2019.

No holding back. No excuses. Just change Wirral.
