NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest healthcare system in the UK with an annual revenue budget of £3.2 billion, employing around 39,000 staff. We deliver local services to a population of over 1.2 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

Occupational Health and Safety Services are delivered Board wide across our Acute Services, Corporate areas including Estates and Facilities and six Health and Social Care Partnerships.

We are now looking to appoint a new Head of Health and Safety who will set the direction for the further development and implementation of Health and Safety Strategy and Policy across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The post holder will provide professional leadership to the Health and Safety team and will be the focus of professional expertise, advice and guidance for the Board on all aspects of Health, Safety and Risk.

Working collaboratively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders this post demands  significant  expertise  and track record of leading and strengthening systems that  ensure a positive and strong Health, Safety and Wellbeing culture is embedded into everyday activity in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde  enabling our  staff to work in a safe and healthy environment.

As the NHS Board’s expert lead in all matters relating to Occupational Health and Safety the successful candidate will be a key member of the Human Resources and Organisational Development’s Senior Management Team and will have a pivotal role in leading and implementing change management Health, Safety and Wellbeing programmes.

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development this role will contribute significantly to championing and strengthening our health, safety and wellbeing arrangements ensuring all policies have clear implementation and communication plans that meet all statutory requirements including supporting national policy development. The post holder will be expected to provide advice to the NHS Board’s Directors and Chief Officers and work in partnership with representatives of our Staff Professional Associations and Trade Unions on a wide range of Health and Safety compliance matters.

This is a rare opportunity for an individual already experienced in a senior Health and Safety leadership role and who can bring both a strategic and operational approach to ensure delivery of professional standards and performance management across all aspects of Health and Safety.

We are seeking a strategic thinker who can demonstrate significant knowledge and application regarding current health and safety legislation and bring extensive experience of operating at scale within a large and complex multisite organisation delivering services 24/7.

Whilst significant experience in providing strategic, innovative leadership in a senior health and safety role within a large and complex NHS/Health and Social Care or other Public Sector organisation is essential applications are also welcome from other sectors.

This unique and highly visible role requires the vision, political acumen, tactical skills and resilience to operate against a background of multiple competing demands.

Educated to degree level or equivalent with a post graduate qualification in a relevant Health and Safety subject or management. Candidates must have the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent and be a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (CMIOSH).
