Health & Safety Officer
Founded in 1646, Reading Blue Coat is a leading independent day school of 760 pupils; 677 boys aged 11 – 18 and a further 83 girls in the co-educational sixth form. The School is located on a beautiful 46 acre campus in the village of Sonning, just outside Reading, overlooking the River Thames.
The School employs over 170 staff, of whom 50% are academic staff. Reading Blue Coat provides a stimulating, friendly and supportive atmosphere in which each pupil can realise his or her full intellectual, physical and creative potential.
Reporting to the Head of Maintenance, you will be responsible for ensuring that the School is compliant with all health and safety regulations and that the Blue Coat campus is a safe place to work and study.
In support of the leadership team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe operations of the school which, during term time, has over a 1,000 people on site every day with pupils, parents, staff, visitors and external users of school facilities, making for an extremely busy environment in a multiplicity of buildings, facilities and expansive outdoor areas.
You will work closely with the Assistant Bursar and Head of Maintenance in particular, as well as providing expert advice and support to the senior leadership team and the School Health and Safety Committee.
This is a very “hands-on role”, which includes carrying out practical safety tests, audits, risk and workplace assessments, staff safety training, evacuation drills, and statutory reporting.
Candidates will be able to demonstrate successful career achievements in health and safety operations, preferably gained in public venues such as education, hospitality, leisure, or health and care environments.
You will have detailed up to date knowledge of the HASWA and all other Health and Safety legislation and regulations and will preferably hold the NEBOSH or other equivalent Health and Safety qualification.
We offer an excellent pay and benefits package, including 33 days holiday each year (plus additional discretionary days); generous pension scheme; free meals and refreshments on duty; free leisure facilities; and a wide range of other benefits.
Reading Blue Coat School has been recognised by the Daily Telegraph as one of ten independent schools offering the best value in the UK. It will provide a stimulating and vibrant environment in which to pursue your career and, if invited for interview, you will see that it is an outstanding environment to work in.
