Job title: Construction Safety Advisor

Salary: Up to £45K

Hours: 9am till 5pm, Mon-Fri. (potential of a little flex within these hours)

Location: Central London (Swiss Cottage)

About the job:

Provide specialist health and safety advice and support for all construction projects and plant / facilities maintenance activities within Arriva Rail London across the London Overground network. Work as part of the ARL SEQW team, and with wider Arriva business and rail industry bodies to support the continuous improvement agenda.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Act as the authoritative voice for the built environment providing guidance on all H&S issues attending project meetings to ensure H&S is effectively considered in design and installation
  • Apply an independent review at key stages within the program to confirm compliance with CDM regulations and other industry legislation.
  • Confirm appointment of CDM Duty Holders and ensure their compliance with current Regulations and discharging their responsibilities
  • Ensure a clear process for risk assessment forms an integral part of the design deliverables undertaking reviews of Construction Phase Plans, Risk Assessments, Method Statements, Work Package Plans, ARL Site Access Requests and supporting documentation are adequate prior to commencement of works
  • Ensure ARL’s Protection through the Engineering Design process is being applied to hazard elimination & risk mitigation / control for all construction work. (Safety by Design)
  • Ensure that H&S Files are completed, carry out site audits, site safety inspections and safety tours engaging with contractors on site

Background:

  • Minimum five years delivering safety management on construction sites
  • Comprehensive understanding of railway and environs construction
  • Good understanding of health and safety in the workplace
  • Experience of occupation health and wellbeing legislative and industry standards
  • Experience of leading safety tours, safety inspections and incident/accident investigations
  • Comprehensive understanding of current CDM regulations and related legislation
  • Experience of advising, coaching and supporting managers

Knowledge:

  • Good knowledge of railway operations
  • Good knowledge of legislative and industry standards pertaining to railway operations
  • Strong IT skills – Microsoft Office, excel, word, outlook

You will have:

Education:

  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate (essential)
  • CSCS Card (desirable)
  • PTS / Sentinel Card (desirable)

Skills and competencies:

  • Ability to work methodically with excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills at all levels both written and spoken
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines prioritise effectively and to work flexibly
  • Ability to work well as part of a small specialist team
