At Worcestershire County Council, our people work hard for the citizens, communities and businesses of this area. In return, we look after their futures – and that includes taking good care of their occupational health and safety.

In this high-profile role, you will be an active member of the HR, OD and Engagement Leadership Team, providing strategic leadership and direction for occupational health and safety (OH&S) across the council. A trusted source of expertise, you’ll advise senior management, elected members and trade unions on a range of OH&S issues. You will also market and deliver services to a small number of external customers.

Leading a multidisciplinary team, you’ll ensure OH&S is promoted as a council workforce priority while fostering and embedding a strong health and safety culture. By regularly reviewing corporate policies and procedures, you’ll secure a pragmatic and proportionate approach to risk. We’ll look to you to challenge existing practices and to research, design and implement innovative new ways of working. You’ll also contribute to planning for major emergencies, including the current Covid-19 outbreak.

A Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), you’re likely to have experience of managing a professional occupational health and safety service within a local authority or public sector setting.  This should be backed by a relevant degree and a NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent qualification). Experience of leading, managing and motivating others in a change environment is vital. Pragmatic, with an analytical approach to problem solving, you’ll also have exceptional communication skills and the ability to persuade and wield influence at all levels of the organisation.

We are inclusive – this is important to us and we are proud to be a Disability Confident Employer.

Disability Confident is helping us recruit and retain great people to meet our workforce needs.

If you have a disability and require reasonable adjustments, please let us know.
