Background

A new vacancy has arisen for a full time Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Safety Health Environment (SHE) Advisor at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) at Harwell near Oxford to support new and exciting science programmes that are being developed on the RAL site.  Reporting to the RAL SHE Group leader.

This is a key role that will underpin the development and delivery of STFC SHE policies and management systems at RAL and across the STFC. 

In a small team, this appointment is an opportunity for the STFC SHE Group to add specific skills and experience in areas such as:

  • Contractor management
  • Chemical safety
  • Fire and emergency safety management 
  • Engineering safety disciplines (construction, electrical, mechanical)
  • Waste management and environmental management.

List of Duties/Work Programme/Responsibilities:

  • Provide professional SHE advice and guidance to all science facility users and support them in discharging their responsibility for the implementation of the STFC SHE Management System.
  • Support development of the STFC’s documented SHE Codes based upon experience of internal application, audit findings, external best practice, and legislative changes.
  • Manage and develop the provision of effective, efficient and professional SHE services. 
  • Ensure that all RAL SHE incidents are reported, investigated appropriately and actions established to minimise the likelihood of their repetition. 
  • Monitor and audit, the effectiveness and efficiency of the SHE Management System.
  • Communicate and liaise closely with all the key stakeholders in the STFC SHE Management System, and all regulatory authorities, as required.
  • Prepare and deliver STFC specific SHE on-line and face to face training programmes.

Assessment is through shortlisting (S), at Interview (I) or both (S&I) as follows:

Essential:

  • Educated to degree or HND level in a science or engineering discipline (S)
  • Demonstrable experience of successful delivery of a SHE Advisory role in science, engineering or technology sectors. (S,I)
  • NEBOSH Diploma (http://www.nebosh.org.uk/awardsnew.asp?ID=8), or equivalent qualification, or evidence of commencement and part completion of Diploma or equivalent qualification (S,I)
  • A working knowledge of current and forthcoming changes to relevant SHE legislation relevant to STFC operations. (S,I)

Desirable:

 

  • A good knowledge of SHE management systems and safe systems of work. (I)
  • Background knowledge of construction/engineering safety management (S,I)
  • Experience planning, undertaking and reporting SHE audits (S,I)
  • Successful development and delivery of face to face and/or on-line SHE training (S,I)
  • A good knowledge of Fire Safety management (S,I)
  • A good knowledge of Emergency Management (S,I)
