Nuclear Associate – Site Safety
We raise standards in a complex, fast-paced industry.
Discover what we can do for careers.
The challenge
Often in the public eye, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we’re responsible for shaping and delivering the regulation of nuclear safety and security across the UK. Join us as a Nuclear Associate and you could go on to become an Inspector with our expert training. If you have the talent and potential, we’ll help you build a fulfilling career at the heart of a unique sector.
The role
Our Nuclear Internal Hazards and Site Safety team assesses Health & Safety across the nuclear industry. As a Nuclear Associate, you’ll help our team of Conventional H&S inspectors to carry out vital regulatory duties. By assisting with a wide range of tasks, from inspecting nuclear sites and investigating incidents to assessing emergency plans and implementing enforcement measures, you’ll give our team the support to perform at their very best.
It’s a varied role that involves applying expert judgment and efficient administration, as well as involvement in interesting projects and cross-programme work. If you have the motivation and aptitude to succeed, we’ll support your career growth with exceptional training and development.
The person
With a background in the nuclear industry or a similar high hazard area, you’ll be a skilled Health & Safety professional with industrial experience. Degree-qualified (or equivalent) in a STEM subject, you’ll have the drive to become a Chartered Member of a relevant professional body. Ideally, you’ll also have a level 6 professional qualification in Occupational Health & Safety.
Although technical knowledge is important, so are strong communication skills. We’re looking for motivated, collaborative people who can build good relationships and work as part of a team.
Please note that you are likely to be working from home initially due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The rewards
We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £31,713 - £37,193 (plus an additional £4,052 London Weighting Allowance). Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). Plus, you’ll receive a generous holiday entitlement.
About us
ONR is a Public Corporation with a Mission to ensure the highest standards of safety and security across all of the UK’s licensed nuclear sites. Our staff are drawn from a wider range of professional backgrounds in order to run a stand-alone business with specialist inspectors to deliver our core business including civil engineering, radiological protection, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear physics. And together they’re involved in everything from assessing safety cases, inspecting nuclear sites, communicating our decisions, training new recruits and representing the UK and ONR within the wider International nuclear community.
