Normally based at our UKCEH Lancaster site, Library Ave, LA1 4AP - though home-working as a consequence of Covid-19 may be required for a period of the contract.

Purpose of Role

 

This post will support the provision and ongoing development of SHE (Safety Heath & Environment) services across UKCEH. Work strategically to help deliver continual improvement; provide expert advice and support to our scientific researchers and infrastructure staff that is responsive, informed, and appropriate; support legal compliance through the SHE management systems and their continued external certification to ISO 45001 / ISO 14001.

 

 

 

Main Role Responsibilities

 

The role will involve a wide range of employee engagement activities, organisational performance reporting and delivery of SHE services and systems, with an emphasis on acting as a key contact for SHE advice across the organisation.

 

 

 

You will be valued member of a small but busy team of SHE Advisors spread across the four UKCEH sites. The immediate need is to provide safety, health and environmental expertise and advice through the SHE helpdesk, whilst the team work together to deliver its three-year strategy objectives, improving SHE services and solutions across the organisation.

 

 

 

Activities undertaken by the Team of SHE Advisors include:

 

  • Acting as a key point of contact, responding to enquiries for SHE advice in accordance with organisational procedures, compliance obligations and best practice measures

     

  • Leading or participating in SHE internal audits across the organisation’s four sites, including identification of non-conformances and follow up of corrective actions

     

  • Collating evidence and representing UKCEH at external management system audits

     

  • Reviewing and advising on risk assessments and appropriate control measures, including DSE, COSHH, Laboratory and Fieldwork activity assessments

     

  • Initiating Accident, Incident and Near Miss investigations, including report writing and follow up of corrective actions

     

  • Where competent, providing in-house training and induction to UKCEH people on specific topics

     

  • Coordinating provision of SHE services, e.g., Occupational Health, overseas travel management, online training platforms

     

  • Communication of SHE activities and advice through internal media channels and undertaking performance reporting for managers and committees

     

  • Undertaking specific tasks, including staff engagement, to support achievement of strategic SHE objectives

     

  • Developing new and existing SHE procedures to ensure legal compliance and maintenance of our ISO standards

     

 

 

You will be expected to undertake all of the above activities in collaboration with the existing SHE Advisors and provide additional support to the UKCEH SHE Advisor (team manager) as required.

 

 

 

Essential Requirements  

 

Knowledge & qualifications

 

  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline

     

  • NEBOSH Certificate (or equivalent) in Occupational Health & Safety or higher

     

  • Knowledge of ISO 45001 or OHSAS 18001 management systems and requirements

     

  • Up to date with the latest developments in health and safety, including legal requirements

     

 

 

Experience & proven abilities

 

  • Ability to work as part of a team to deliver key objectives

     

  • A ‘customer focused’ and ‘solution orientated’ approach to delivering a SHE service

     

  • Experience of providing health and safety advice to people at all levels of an organisation

     

  • Understanding and experience of risk management and mitigation

     

  • Experience of auditing against internal procedures and planning effective corrective actions

     

  • Understanding and experience of accident investigation and root cause analysis

     

 

 

Skills

 

  • Excellent communication skills, oral, written and presentation, and ability to communicate at all levels of the organisation  

     

  • Ability to write effective reports with impact 

     

  • Innovative, methodical and practical approach to problem solving, with the ability to follow processes and procedures 

     

  • Good time management and ability to prioritise varied workload with the flexibility to change task/priority as need arises, including in response to new and unexpected situations, for example COVID-19 pandemic 

     

  • Ability and willingness to expand your safety, health & environmental knowledge, skills and understanding of UKCEH site and science activities 

     

  • Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Teams, Outlook and use of SharePoint

Other

 

  • A full clean driver’s license

     

  •  Willingness to travel to all four UKCEH sites and stay away from home for short periods of time (once COVID restrictions are lifted)

     

 

 

Desirable Requirements

  • A degree in environmental, biological or chemical sciences or experience working in a scientific research/laboratory environment 

     

  • Experience of working in an organisation undertaking fieldwork activities, including overseas 

     

  • Developing and delivering internal training courses or worker engagement communications 

     

  • Experience of providing SHE related incident response support 

     

  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 environmental management system Standard and requirements 

     

  • IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management (or equivalent) 

     

  • Trained to Lead Auditor level for ISO 45001 or OHSAS 18001 

     

  • Any other relevant, specific health and safety knowledge and experience of; working at height, electromagnetic fields, respiratory protective equipment (RPE), workplace ergonomics, workshop equipment, mental health and wellbeing etc.
