You will join the dedicated team of health, safety & environment professionals and will lead the development and modernising of the safety management system and our approach to safety and health learning. You will engage and support senior managers across the RSPB, helping them ensure health and safety is embedded in their plans to deliver our ambitious strategy to 2030. As the most senior specialist health and safety role, you will be developing of all aspects of RSPB’s health, safety and wellbeing approach.

You will work with the Health, safety and environment team to update and improve our approach to safety assurance and monitoring and link to other risk functions within RSPB to ensure a more holistic approach to risk management, data collection and reporting. You will be a member of the People Directorate’s Management Group working with Environmental, HR, L&D, Volunteering and Facilities managers to help the People Leadership Team ensure join up and workload management. You will work alongside Health and safety Delivery Managers, the Head of Environmental Management and the Head of Health, safety and environment. This team leads the geographically spread specialist advisors across the whole of RSPB to integrate pragmatic and supportive learning and advice to enable RSPB’s workforce of over 2100 employees and 14000 volunteers to deliver safe and healthy work for nature conservation. This includes a wide range of activities - the safety of our premises and other structures (fire and electrical safety, asbestos and legionella management and suitable welfare provision etc), significant habitat management or creation (forestry and agricultural work), contract management, CDM regulations, lone and remote working, international travel and the use of machinery and equipment.

You will lead work with the Learning and Development Teams to embed safety learning into our processes, with an early focus on a programme of safety leadership for managers at the highest levels. You will work with the Delivery Managers to support teams on the ground and ensure consistency of standards and support. You will be responsible for ensuring our third-party support systems – incident recording, audit and assurance reporting and lone worker buddy system in particular – are fit for purpose and provide what RSPB needs.

Our nature reserves are amazing places but vary significantly. Some are major visitor destinations with Visitor Centres, shops, cafes and play equipment whilst others have fewer visitors and simple infrastructure such as birdwatching hides and boardwalks. They are loved by our visitors of all types and you will need to have a thorough understanding of Visitor Safety Management to lead these developments and empower the operational managers in taking reasonable steps to manage visitor safety. Our non-reserve based workers may be office or home based, roving membership recruiters working at external locations and research and investigations colleagues working in challenging and remote locations. We run significant one-off projects and programmes where safety and health issues need to be included at the right stage. Our international work includes pest eradication from UK Overseas territories and helping Birdlife Partners in East Africa and Indonesia.

In short, The RSPB does many amazing things, and the health, safety and environment department is well integrated into this delivery. We need someone who can form excellent working relationships, has a detailed health and safety management knowledge and has experience of developing sensible systems for a multi-site, geographically dispersed organisation. You will influence how we do things for the whole organisation and by supporting our teams to work safely and sustainably you will be directly contributing to our conservation objectives with teams being happier, healthier and more effective in their roles.

**Working hours flexible to suit successful candidate between 30 and 37.5 hours.

What we need from you

  • We need a people person who can demonstrates how you form great relationships and influence managers regardless of their position within the organisation.
  • You will need to have a flexible leadership style to influence the many and varied colleagues you work with as you help to improve safety performance and deliver consistency.
  • You will develop excellent working relationships with your Health, safety and environment leadership team colleagues so together we can deliver continued improvement to our safety learning, procedures and practices.
  • The post-holder will have significant health and safety knowledge and experience in the land and visitor risk management field, knowing when to escalate issues for wider corporate risk evaluation and response.
  • You will be able to interpret legal requirements and describe them to colleagues in a straightforward and pragmatic way using excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • You will have demonstrable experience of establishing and/or developing safety management systems across a multi-site organisation.
  • You will be able to demonstrate delivery of safety and health learning in a variety of ways and to a variety of audiences. (Desirable)
  • You will be a Chartered Member of IOSH or equivalent with experience of developing changes in safety management across a multi-site organisation.
  • You will be able to travel to remote places without public transport access.
