We are hiring for a Safety, Health & Environment Advisor in the STFC Safety Health Environment Group at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) at Harwell near Oxford.  The role of Safety, Health & Environment Advisor is a busy, varied and exciting one, working closely with all departments, giving great opportunities to use and develop your skills to make a difference to UK science. 

This is a full-time role to support new and exciting science programmes that are being developed on the RAL site, for example the National Satellite Testing Facility (NSTF), Extreme Photonics Application Centre (EPAC), and National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC). Reporting to the RAL Safety Health & Environment Group Leader, these are key roles that will underpin the development and delivery of STFC Safety, Health & Environment policies and management systems at RAL and across the STFC. 

In a small team, this appointment is an opportunity for the STFC Safety, Health & Environment Group to add specific skills and experience in areas such as: contractor management; chemical safety; fire and emergency safety management; engineering safety disciplines (construction, electrical, mechanical); waste management and environmental management.

You’ll need to be a team player with a sound grasp of successful delivery in a Safety, Health & Environment Advisory role, ideally in science, engineering or technology sectors.  You’ll need charisma and tact, and be able to manage your own workload and handle multiple projects at any one time.  Proactive and adaptable, you’ll demonstrate sound judgement and integrity, becoming a trusted partner for both staff and others.

About you

  • Educated to degree or HND level in a science or engineering discipline
  • NEBOSH Diploma, or equivalent qualification, or evidence of commencement and part completion of Diploma or equivalent qualification
  • Demonstrable experience of successful delivery of a Safety, Health & Environment Advisory role in science, engineering or technology sectors
  • Proactive with a high degree of self-motivation and independence, able to deliver under pressure and against tight deadlines
