People Services Manager – Health, Safety & Wellbeing

£43,524 to £52,565 (with an attractive employers’ pension contribution to the civil service pension scheme) plus an additional £4,052 London Weighting Allowance (if applicable)

Location: Bootle/Cheltenham/London with flexible working options

We support the nuclear industry.

You’ll support ONR.

The challenge

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we’re responsible for regulating nuclear site health and safety, nuclear safety, security, safeguards and the transport of radioactive materials. It’s a fast-moving world and you’ll be joining at an exciting and critical time. As a People Services Manager for Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW), you’ll keep our team safe as we improve and progress.

The role

As the nuclear sector transforms, so does ONR. We aim to be a leader in managing health and safety, and you’ll play a key part. As a valued member of the Health, Safety & Wellbeing team, you’ll keep our people safe by continually improving our safety management system and strengthening our safety culture. In collaboration with our team, you’ll lead ONR on an HSW journey.

Day to day, you’ll implement our vision for HSW, working with colleagues to embed it across the organisation. Drawing on your understanding of our risk profile, you’ll ensure legal requirements are met and support staff to develop safe systems of work where necessary. As you work, you’ll build a network of contacts with a similar risk profile and present reports to our Executive team. In addition, there will be audits to carry out and IOSH seminars to attend.

The person

This is a busy, visible role, where experience is essential. You may have worked with another regulator or a public service organisation. Whatever your background, you’ll be NEBOSH-qualified, with excellent communication skills, both face-to-face and on paper. So, you can present reports, influence and build trust, collaborate, write risk assessments and make complex matters easy to understand for non-technical contacts. Above all, you must know how health and safety legislation applies to workplace risks. Whether working independently or as part of the wider HR team, you’ll be an asset to ONR, making a difference to staff every day.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £43,524 to £52,565 plus an additional £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable. Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits), and generous holiday entitlement.

About us

ONR is a Public Corporation with a mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. Our staff are drawn from a wide range of professional backgrounds with specialist inspectors to deliver our core business including civil engineering, radiological protection, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear physics. Together they’re involved in everything from assessing safety documentation, inspecting nuclear sites and communicating our decisions, to training new recruits and representing the UK and ONR nationally and internationally.
